Sicop was
a construction company located in Valencia, but most of the people working for
the Sicop were Catalan. Sicop was
in charge of all the land-preparation, as well as of the construction of all the
antenna anchors and platforms. Sicop subcontracted
with other companies for site preparation work, an effort that lasted more than
three years. Sicop oversaw and supervised the
extensive earth-moving effort using large earth-moving equipment to eliminate
giant dunes and to level the landscape to accommodate later construction of
buildings and antennas. The effort also included the building of road-beds and
installation of fencing. After the platform sites for all
antennas were prepared, the main effort of installing guy anchorages began. The
effort was slow because of the difficulty of dealing with beach sand while
excavating 100m2 pits and many miscellaneous holes of 3,70 meters
diameters. After the excavation work was completed, it was necessary to install
complicated wooden form work to handle the concrete pouring. Form work
design and installation had to be very precise and were closely monitored by Sicop
engineers. During the final year, even as site-preparation
work was still underway, steel-work and installation of the smaller
antennas began. The erectors came from London, young people and very agile.
They even brought their own doctor who looked after their health quite
closely and even controlled their diets, saying what they could and could not
eat. The tools and equipment used during the antenna erection phase were
new to us and it was quite intriguing to watch these experts at work. Later the
construction of the buildings and the remaining antennas was started
